Transport is a HUGE problem with this proposal. This is an immensely impractical location for a major 'new town' development. - The strategic road network (M27) is already overloaded. Local roads are inadequate and any new road links will ruin the area and encroach on the diminishing green belt.
- For public transport (trains/buses), the rail link to Southampton is limited by engineering constraints and will have limited capacity, even at massive expense, and buses will be restricted by inadequate road capacity.
- Access to M27, main roads and railways can only be gained by carving new roads through this rural area. Local communities would be swamped with extra traffic and pollution.
6,000+ more dwellings is nearly 3 times the current size of Botley, and equates to 14,000+ more people and 9,000+ more cars on the roads. The reality for roads would be the need for major building and widening programmes, which would still leave increased heavy congestion and widespread gridlock at peak times. The diagram below shows the traffic loading routes: - west through Hedge End and Botley to reach the M27 and Southampton
- north through Horton Heath and Fairoak to reach the M3 and Winchester
- and south to the Whitley link.
In addition to the main traffic flows, ALL minor routes would also experience increased 'rat-run' traffic.
